On 28 October, we had the honour of taking part in a presentation of Ukrainian cuisine for the spouses of ambassadors accredited to the Republic of Finland, held at the Embassy of Ukraine in Finland. The event was organised with the support of the Ukrainian Association in Finland (Ukrainalaisten yhdistys Suomessa ry).
Representing the Ukrainian Gastronomic Sisterhood, we — Marianna Dushar, food anthropologist, researcher, culinary writer, and Honorary Ambassador of Ukraine for Culinary Diplomacy, and Lola Landa, chef and researcher of Ukrainian Jewish cuisine — introduced our distinguished guests to the gastronomic heritage of the historical region of Galicia.
The event, entitled “A Journey through Galicia, Where Ukraine Tastes Different,” invited guests to discover the region through a short film showcasing its historic landmarks and natural landscapes, an exhibition of traditional clothing and tableware, and a presentation of regional dishes. The programme also included an interactive cooking workshop, which was received with great warmth and enthusiasm.
Throughout the event, we shared the idea that cuisine can serve as a language of trust, empathy, and solidarity — and it was in precisely this spirit that the gathering unfolded.
A special musical highlight of the evening was a performance of “Melody” by Myroslav Skoryk, performed by Finnish violinist Sebastian Silén.
Guests enjoyed a tasting menu featuring Ukrainian borshch, vushka (traditional dumplings), banosh, a selection of traditional salads, and medivnyk (honey cake). Each dish was accompanied by a story explaining its origins and significance within the regional culinary tradition. The programme also featured a tasting of a distinctive Galician wine — the dry raspberry wine “Morning Dew” (Rankova Rosa) from the craft winery Halytska Soroka.
The atmosphere throughout the event was warm, sincere, and deeply moving. At its conclusion, guests expressed their support for Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression, and the spouses of ambassadors voiced their willingness to help organise a charitable event in support of Ukraine.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Association of Spouses of Ukrainian Diplomats, especially Tetiana Sybiha and Khrystyna Vydoinyk, as well as to the Ukrainian Association in Finland, our volunteers, partners, and the entire team of the Embassy of Ukraine in Finland for their invaluable support in making this event possible.
